The UK house of Commons Environment Audit Committee’s report has backed a deposit return scheme (DRS) and higher taxes for packaging that is difficult to recycle and recommended that PET bottles have a 50% recycled content by 2023. The Packaging Export Recovery Note system, that is meant to cover the recycling obligation of packaging producers, has not encouraged local recycling and needs to be reformed.
