Sainsbury’s CEO Mike Coupe makes it clear that it is difficult for retailers to switch from plastics to biodegradable and compostable packaging. He advises that due to every local authority having a different approach to recycling, it’s impossible to solve the plastic problem unless there is a framework for the whole of the UK. This is a clear message to the UK government and others globally that there needs to be clear national (and international) policy for effective recycling. But all retailers can boost the process with using at least 25% recycled content in all packages.
