Swindon Borough Council wants to burn plastic along with other black bag waste rather than recycling the material. While this seems to be a simple way forward at a time when other countries are increasingly refusing to take UK’s waste, it cannot be seen as a positive step in the efforts to create a circular economy. Plastics can be easily sorted and the Council could invest is modern MRF facilities to recover the materials that are now in significant demand by retailers and brand owners. The era of ignoring the end of life of plastics is surely over being replaced by a new phase of producer responsibility!
