The issue of producer responsibility will transform the packaging and recycling landscape with a move to a new waste strategy which is due to be published in a few weeks. Contributions from retailers and producers will increase from an average of about £70m a year to between £500m and £1bn a year. This will have a major impact on the type of packaging produced and the linkage to local recycling strategy and technologies used to ensure that packaging is readily re-used back into new packaging as part of the circular economy. While the details of the strategy will be eagerly awaited by some and with apprehension by others, it is clear that strong action is required to address the long standing problems created by inadequate end of life strategies for plastics.
